Opal's Summer of Fun Program aspires to reinvigorate the lives of local seniors by including them in the seasonal activities we all enjoy - fishing, gardening, cookouts, the KY State Fair, and even a Belle of Louisville Cruise! We also provide lasting quality of life improvements through music, access to transportation (for medical appointments or social events), and in some cases, enhanced mobility. So far this year, we've fulfilled over 75 dream requests, and delivered hundreds of items to dozens of homes - but with your help, next year will be even bigger!
Making 15 garden boxes takes a lot of wood - so much in fact, it required heavy equipment - not to mention tons of elbow grease!
Garden Boxes are a staple of the Summer of Fun Program - they provide hours of enjoyment to the residents, serve as a focal point for group activities and socializing, brighten the facilities with flowers, and some even grew vegetables - which were incorporated into healthy meals the residents prepared themselves!
Kick-off day for the Summer of Fun didn't include the great summer weather we hoped for - but it brought most of our board together for a long day of giving and service - which is great blessing unto itself!
Take a look at what became of those empty garden boxes!
But wait - there's more! We also took residents on a fishing trip, a state fair trip, and sent others to the Belle of Louisville. of course, we also fulfilled a litany of individual and group requests, including cotton candy and popcorn machines, a new grill, jukeboxes, Boomboxes, MP3 players, party supplies...And NECESSITY items such as wheelchairs, comfort pets, and a cool new device that allows parkinson's pateients to feed themselves!
