Board Chairman Jerry Stith speaking at the Bell Awards

Opal’s founder and very active chairman, Jerry’s strategic vision and clear sense of purpose have guided our foundation to continually achieve new successes. Despite being a prominent local business owner - overseeing 14 retail locations in Louisville & Southern Indiana - he dedicates 20+ hours each week volunteering for Opal’s. Always highly regarded among peers for his affability and compassion, Jerry’s devotion to this cause was stirred during a 2011 visit to Highlands Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he learned of Opal Grubbs – and saw the plight of so many nursing home residents firsthand. Since that day, he has devoted himself to improving quality of life for seniors living in nursing homes. Focused on community collaboration, and drawing on a deep well of compassion, he’s led Opal’s Dream Foundation to incredible growth - from serving one home in 2011 to over 50 homes today. For his inspiring work, Jerry was recognized as a 2016 WLKY Bell Award Recipient. Jerry received his B.S. in Political Science from the University of Louisville, served in the US Air Force, and is owner of JC’s Cigarette Outlet.

Pete Ramsey, Vice Chairman of the Board

Pete began volunteering in 2012, and became a Board Member for Opal’s Dream Foundation in early 2013, taking on the role of Vice Chairman later that year.  In 2017, Pete also assumed the responsibility of Social Media Chairman.  Pete has worked for the Kentucky Lottery since 1989 where he is currently Vice President of Sales.

Janet Stith, Secretary

Janet, like her husband Jerry, is driven to serve, and has taken up our mission as her own. She helped establish Opal’s in 2011, and has worked behind the scenes to grow the foundation ever since.  Janet officially joined the board of directors in 2012 and was appointed Secretary, taking on the role of Fundraising Chair the following year. In the latter capacity, she is tasked with planning, organizing, and executing our Annual Gala – and the results have been remarkable!  Janet is a graduate of the University of Louisville, and a retired Human Resources Professional.

Ken Dozer, Treasurer

Ken was one of the first sponsors of Opal’s dream foundation, moved to action by a compassion for the elderly which he shares with his wife. Ken joined Opal’s team in 2013, and soon took on the role of Treasurer. Ken is heavily involved in fundraising, and spearheads the Annual Golf Tournament for us each year. Ken is the President of WesBanco in Hardin County, KY & surrounding areas.

Peter Kaufman MDiv., Chaplain

Peter has specialized in ministry to senior adults since his career began. He has served as Opal’s Dream Foundation chaplain since 2012, providing ecumenical spiritual care to seniors in our facilities. His duties include weekly bible studies, resident visitation and counseling, hospital visitation, and eulogy performance. His outreach is continuous, and his impact in the lives of those he serves simply cannot be overstated.

Dick Wilson

Dick Wilson began working with Opal’s Dream Foundation in 2013 in an advisory role. His expertise and knowledge of charitable organizations has helped to grow Opal’s Dream Foundation. Dick officially joined the board in 2015, and continues to offer his strategic vision to the organization. Dick is Senior Vice President of Wealth Management for the Trident Group at Morgan Stanley in Louisville, KY.

Vanessa Pierani

Vanessa is a Bullitt County resident and experienced social worker.  Her vast career has given her many opportunities to work and interact with the elderly in the local community.  Vanessa joined the Board of Directors of Opal’s Dream Foundation in 2017, and immediately accepted the position of Community Outreach Chair.  Vanessa received Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Social work from Spalding University. She currently works as a social worker for Elder Law Solutions, PLLC.

Colleen O’Connor

Colleen O'Connor is a Louisville resident and local business owner. Prior to moving to Louisville with her husband in 2003, she resided in Washington, DC, working as a professional voice-over artist. She continues to divide her time between her business and voice-over work. She joined our board in 2015, and in 2017 accepted the position of Marketing Chair.

Chris Ann Cherry

Chris Ann began volunteering with Opal's Dream Foundation in 2012, and in 2015 she accepted a position on the board of directors. She recently became Media Chairman for Opal’s Dream Foundation. Chris Ann is retired from the marketing department of the University of Louisville and currently works in the Jefferson County school system.

Paul Thompson

Paul is a lifelong Louisville resident, and our newest board member, joining in 2017. In addition to building & maintaining our website, Paul is active in the nonprofit community, and will be working to obtain greater institutional support for Opal’s.

Tony Hill

Tony is resident of Louisville, and a longtime supporter of Opal’s Dream Foundation. Tony began volunteering his time and talent in 2012. He joined the board of Opal’s Dream Foundation in 2015 and initiated our social media campaigns. Tony is a restaurant manager at Mark’s Feed Store.

Lt. Colonel Bob Stith, USAF (Ret.)

Continuing a lifetime of public service as a board member of the Opal’s Foundation, Bob takes an active role in processing Dream Requests, and bringing them to fruition. After a distinguished career in the US Air Force - and almost a decade as a public servant at the Defense Intelligence Agency - he moved to Kentucky, and joined Opal’s Dream Foundation in 2013. In 2014, Colonel Stith took on the responsibility of Strategic Planning Chairman.

Lt. Colonel Bruce Coyne, US Army (Ret.)

Bruce served our country with distinction during his 20 years of active duty, including 4 combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He moved to Kentucky in 2003, spending 4 years at Fort Knox as Inspector General with the US Army Recruiting Command. A 2017 addition to our board, Bruce is now our Auction Chairman.

Our mission at Opal’s Dream Foundation is to enrich the lives of people in long-term care facilities by meeting their physical, emotional, or spiritual needs. Many times, these simple requests require nothing more than socks, a robe, or a bar of Dove soap. Other times it’s a trip to Churchill Downs, the Louisville Zoo, or Derby Dinner Playhouse – perhaps even a last chance to ride a Harley or go fishing. To meet physical and medical needs, Opal’s has provided hearing aids, dentures, wheelchairs, even prosthetic limbs. We have a Chaplain, who visits and prays with residents, often with a pet rabbit in tow. And each year, with generous donations from our supporters, we bring Christmas cheer - and gifts - to nursing home residents across Central Kentucky and Southern Indiana. All this is possible only through the generous donations of people like you – people who care. I invite you to join us for our Annual Gala or Golf Scramble, or to volunteer your time and see for yourself the incredible impact that kindness can make in the lives of others. If you’re able to contribute financially, as I do, then Opal’s would be grateful for your gift, and we look forward to putting it to the best use possible. I humbly ask that you consider joining us, as we carry out this important mission to improve the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten. And of course, your donations are tax deductible, and a receipt will be provided for your records. Thank you!
